## Documentation

# Deploy and Host Bitwarden Lite on Railway

[Bitwarden Lite](https://bitwarden.com/help/install-and-deploy-lite/) is a lightweight, official self-hosted password management solution from Bitwarden. It provides secure storage and synchronization of passwords, passkeys, secure notes, and sensitive information across devices. With encrypted vaults, browser extensions, and mobile applications, Bitwarden Lite offers a streamlined way to manage credentials while maintaining control over your infrastructure.

## About Hosting Bitwarden Lite

Hosting Bitwarden Lite on Railway allows you to deploy your own password management server with minimal infrastructure management. This template uses the official Bitwarden Lite container alongside PostgreSQL for persistent database storage.

Railway simplifies deployment by providing HTTPS access, private networking, environment variable management, and persistent storage.

Before deployment, users must obtain an Installation ID and Installation Key from Bitwarden to activate their self-hosted instance. Once configured, the application provides a secure web vault accessible through browsers, desktop applications, and mobile devices.

Bitwarden Lite is designed primarily for personal and homelab environments rather than enterprise deployments.

## Common Use Cases

- **Personal Password Management** — Securely store and synchronize passwords, passkeys, and sensitive credentials across multiple devices.
- **Private Password Infrastructure** — Maintain control over your encrypted vault data by hosting your own password management server.
- **Home Lab Security** — Centralize credential management for personal servers, applications, and self-hosted services.

## Dependencies for Bitwarden Lite Hosting

- **Bitwarden Lite** — Official lightweight Bitwarden server providing password management, authentication, and synchronization.
- **PostgreSQL** — Relational database for persistent storage of encrypted vault records, accounts, and application metadata.
- **Persistent Storage** — Retains application configuration and uploaded attachments across deployments.

## Implementation Details

### Installation Credentials

Before deploying, generate your official Bitwarden installation credentials.

1. Visit [Bitwarden Host Registration](https://bitwarden.com/host/).
2. Sign in or create a Bitwarden account if required.
3. Generate your **Installation ID** and **Installation Key**.
4. Enter both credentials into the corresponding Railway template variables.
5. Deploy the template and access your Bitwarden instance through its HTTPS domain.

### Initial Account Registration

User registration is enabled initially to allow creation of the first account.

After creating your account, disable public registration in the Railway configuration and redeploy the application.

For additional security, enable two-step login and use a strong, unique master password.

### Backup Recommendations

Regularly back up your PostgreSQL database and persistent application files. Store encrypted backups in a separate, secure location and periodically test the restoration process.
