# Deploy and Host Claude Code Terminal - Ubuntu 24.04 on Railway

Claude Code Terminal - Ubuntu 24.04 is a password-protected Linux shell that runs in your browser. It boots a full Ubuntu 24.04 root environment with Claude Code, Node.js 22, Python 3, git and the usual build tools already installed, served over HTTPS by ttyd. Open the URL, log in, run `claude`, and start working. No SSH keys, no local install, nothing to configure.

## About Hosting Claude Code Terminal - Ubuntu 24.04

Hosting a browser terminal means three things: running a long-lived container, exposing it over HTTPS behind authentication, and keeping its filesystem across restarts. This template does all three. The image is built from a Dockerfile, ttyd starts with HTTP basic auth using a username and a 20-character password that Railway generates at deploy time, and a volume is mounted at `/root` so your home directory, your git checkouts and your Claude Code login survive redeploys and restarts. Railway terminates TLS and assigns a public domain on its own, so the terminal is reachable the moment the first deploy goes green.

## Common Use Cases

- Run Claude Code against a repository from any device, including a tablet or a borrowed laptop, without installing anything locally.
- Keep a long-running agent session alive in the cloud while you close your laptop.
- Hand a teammate or a contractor a disposable, isolated Linux box with a known toolchain.
- Debug, script or run one-off data jobs in a clean Ubuntu environment that is one URL away.
- Use it as a jump box onto your other Railway services over the project's private network.

## Dependencies for Claude Code Terminal - Ubuntu 24.04 Hosting

- A Railway account and a single service. No database, no external API, no extra setup.
- A Claude Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise or Console account to sign in to Claude Code. The free claude.ai plan does not include Claude Code access.
- A volume mounted at `/root`, which this template creates for you.

### Implementation Details

Claude Code is installed from Anthropic's signed apt repository. The build verifies the release signing key and fails if its fingerprint is not `31DDDE24DDFAB679F42D7BD2BAA929FF1A7ECACE`, so the image cannot quietly ship an unverified binary.

The terminal itself starts as:

```
ttyd -p "$PORT" -c "$USERNAME:$PASSWORD" /bin/bash
```

Both variables are quoted, so passwords containing spaces or shell metacharacters work as typed.

Also pre-installed: Node.js 22, Python 3 with pip and venv, build-essential, git, ripgrep, jq, curl, wget, vim, nano, less, tmux, htop, tree, zip/unzip, and basic network tools.

## Signing In to Claude Code

Open the terminal, run `claude`, and follow the browser prompt to log in with your Claude account. If you would rather bill through the API, add an `ANTHROPIC_API_KEY` variable to the service and Claude Code will offer to use it. Either way the credentials land in `/root`, which is on the volume, so you sign in once.

## Environment Variables

- `USERNAME` — terminal login username. Defaults to `root`.
- `PASSWORD` — terminal login password. Generated for you at deploy time; change it to something you control before sharing the URL.
- `PORT` — port ttyd listens on. Defaults to `7681`, and Railway routes the public domain to it.

## Security Notes

The terminal sits behind HTTP basic auth over HTTPS and runs as root inside its own container, isolated from your other services unless you connect them. Anyone with the URL and the credentials gets a root shell and your Claude Code session, so treat the password like an SSH key.
