## Documentation

# Deploy and Host Datasette on Railway

[Datasette](https://github.com/simonw/datasette) is a tool for exploring and publishing data. It turns SQLite databases into a browsable website with filters, SQL queries and a JSON API.

## About Hosting Datasette

This template runs the official `datasetteproject/datasette` image and serves `/data/data.db` on port 8080 with a persistent volume at `/data`. The database file is created empty on first start, so the site comes up immediately. Datasette is read-only: put your own SQLite file at `/data/data.db` in the volume (for example by copying it in with the Railway CLI) and redeploy to publish it.

There is no login. Everything in the database is public, so only publish data you want to share.

## Common Use Cases

- Publish an open dataset with search, filters and CSV/JSON export
- Share a read-only SQL query endpoint for a SQLite database
- Explore a database from a browser without installing anything

## Dependencies for Datasette Hosting

- One service with a volume; nothing else

## Why Deploy Datasette on Railway?

Railway gives you a public HTTPS URL, a persistent volume and automatic restarts with no server to maintain.
