# Deploy and Host Groundmail SMTP Relay on Railway

Groundmail SMTP Relay lets any app on Railway send email over SMTP, on every plan. Railway blocks outbound SMTP on the Free, Trial and Hobby plans, so mail libraries time out. Your app sends SMTP to the relay over Railway's private network, and the relay delivers each message over HTTPS through Groundmail, a transactional email API.

## About Hosting Groundmail SMTP Relay

The relay is a small Node.js service with no database or volume. Deploy it into the same project as your app and paste your Groundmail API key. The template generates the relay's SMTP password for you. Then set your app's SMTP settings to the relay: the host is the relay's private domain (smtp-relay.railway.internal), port 2525, username and password from the relay's variables, and no TLS, since traffic never leaves the private network. The From address must be on a domain you verified in Groundmail. Bcc, attachments, inline images, Reply-To and custom headers are kept, and every message shows up in your Groundmail dashboard with its delivery status.
