# Deploy and Host MongoDB 9 Single-Node Replica Set with Railway

MongoDB is a document database designed for flexible, scalable data storage. A replica set is a group of MongoDB processes that maintain the same data and provide replication and automatic primary election. This template deploys MongoDB 9 as a single-member replica set on Railway, with persistent storage and private networking for applications running within your Railway project.

## About Hosting MongoDB 9 Single-Node Replica Set

Running MongoDB as a replica set is useful even when you only need one database instance. Features such as multi-document transactions and change streams require a replica set, including in single-node development and application environments.

This template automates the setup of MongoDB with a single-member replica set, initializes the database with root credentials, and provides a connection string that applications can use to connect over Railway's private network.

A single-member replica set does not provide redundancy or automatic failover to another server. It is a practical option for applications that need replica set functionality without the operational overhead of a multi-node cluster.

## Common Use Cases

- Applications that require MongoDB transactions or change streams
- Backend APIs, SaaS applications and internal tools
- Development, staging and testing environments
- AI applications that store conversation history, metadata or application state
- Self-hosted projects that need a private MongoDB instance with persistent storage
- Applications that need a straightforward MongoDB deployment on Railway

## Dependencies for MongoDB 9 Single-Node Replica Set Hosting

- MongoDB 9 Community Server
- Railway persistent volume for database storage
- Railway private networking for internal application connectivity
- MongoDB replica set configuration for transaction and change stream support

### Implementation Details

The template deploys a single MongoDB service configured as a one-member replica set.

- The database uses a persistent Railway volume mounted at `/data`.
- Root credentials are configured through environment variables.
- The replica set is configured with the name `rs0`.
- The `MONGO_URL` variable provides the connection string for applications within the Railway project.
- Private networking allows other Railway services to connect without exposing the database directly to the public internet.

The replica set enables MongoDB features that depend on replica set mode, even though only one member is running.

**Your data is stored on a persistent volume.** Keeping the volume attached to the service allows database files to survive normal container restarts and redeployments. Avoid deleting the volume when updating or recreating the service, as doing so can permanently remove your database data.

For production workloads requiring high availability, deploy a multi-member replica set across independent instances and plan for backups, monitoring and recovery.

## Why Deploy MongoDB 9 Single-Node Replica Set on Railway?

Railway provides a straightforward way to deploy databases and application infrastructure alongside your backend services. It handles container deployment, networking and persistent storage configuration, allowing you to focus on building your application.

By deploying MongoDB 9 Single-Node Replica Set on Railway, you get a private, persistent MongoDB database with replica set functionality and minimal setup. It is a convenient foundation for full-stack applications, APIs, AI agents and other services that need MongoDB without managing the underlying server infrastructure.
