## Documentation

# Deploy and Host Neo4j on Railway

Neo4j is a graph database designed for connected data, relationship-heavy applications, knowledge graphs, recommendation systems, fraud detection, GraphRAG, and other workloads where relationships between data are as important as the data itself.

## About Hosting Neo4j

Hosting Neo4j on Railway gives you a managed environment for running a persistent graph database without manually maintaining the underlying server infrastructure.

Neo4j provides both a browser-based administration interface and the Bolt protocol used by applications, drivers, and development tools.

This Railway template exposes both interfaces after deployment:

| Endpoint | Purpose |
|---|---|
| 🌐 **HTTP Public Endpoint** | Access Neo4j Browser and the web interface |
| 🔌 **TCP Public Endpoint** | Connect applications and Neo4j drivers through Bolt |

This makes the deployment usable immediately from both a browser and external applications.

## Required Credentials

Neo4j authentication is enabled by default.

| Credential | Value |
|---|---|
| Username | `neo4j` |
| Password | Automatically generated during deployment |

Keep the generated password secure. Anyone with access to the database credentials and public Bolt endpoint may be able to connect to your Neo4j instance.

## After Deployment

Railway provides two public connection endpoints for this template.

### 🌐 Neo4j Browser

Use the generated **HTTP public domain** to open the Neo4j web interface.

From Neo4j Browser you can:

- ✅ Run Cypher queries
- ✅ Explore nodes and relationships
- ✅ Inspect graph data
- ✅ Create and modify graph structures
- ✅ Monitor and administer your database

### 🔌 Bolt Connection

Use the generated **TCP endpoint** when connecting from:

- ✅ Application backends
- ✅ Neo4j drivers
- ✅ Python applications
- ✅ Java applications
- ✅ JavaScript / Node.js applications
- ✅ GraphQL services
- ✅ AI and GraphRAG applications
- ✅ External database tools

Your connection will generally use the Bolt protocol:

```text
bolt://:
```

Use:

```text
Username: neo4j
Password:
```

## Why Use Neo4j?

| Capability | Neo4j |
|---|:---:|
| 🕸️ Native graph database | ✅ |
| 🔗 Relationship-focused data model | ✅ |
| 📝 Cypher query language | ✅ |
| 🌐 Browser-based interface | ✅ |
| 🔌 Application driver support | ✅ |
| 🧠 Knowledge graphs | ✅ |
| 🤖 GraphRAG workloads | ✅ |
| 🎯 Recommendation systems | ✅ |
| 🛡️ Fraud and anomaly analysis | ✅ |
| 📊 Graph visualization | ✅ |
| 💾 Persistent storage | ✅ |
| 🔐 Built-in authentication | ✅ |
| 🏠 Self-hosted deployment | ✅ |

Neo4j is particularly useful when your application frequently traverses relationships between entities rather than primarily performing traditional relational joins.

## Common Use Cases

| Use Case | Description |
|---|---|
| 🧠 Knowledge graphs | Model interconnected entities, concepts, and metadata |
| 🤖 GraphRAG | Improve AI retrieval using graph relationships and context |
| 🎯 Recommendation engines | Discover relationships between users, products, and behavior |
| 🛡️ Fraud detection | Identify suspicious relationship patterns and transaction networks |
| 👥 Social networks | Model users, connections, communities, and interactions |
| 🔐 Identity & access | Model roles, permissions, users, groups, and resources |
| 🚚 Supply chains | Analyze relationships between suppliers, products, routes, and facilities |
| 🔎 Dependency analysis | Explore relationships between services, infrastructure, or software components |
| 📊 Data exploration | Discover hidden connections within highly related datasets |

## Dependencies for Neo4j Hosting

| Dependency | Required |
|---|:---:|
| Neo4j database | ✅ |
| Persistent storage | ✅ |
| External PostgreSQL | ❌ |
| Redis | ❌ |
| Separate application database | ❌ |
| Additional backend service | ❌ |

Neo4j is a standalone database system and does not require PostgreSQL, Redis, or another database to operate.

## Neo4j vs Other Relevant Databases

| Feature | Neo4j | PostgreSQL | MongoDB | Redis |
|---|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|
| 🕸️ Native graph model | ✅ | ⚠️ Extensions / relational modeling | ⚠️ Document modeling | ⚠️ Specialized structures |
| 🔗 Relationship traversal | ✅ Excellent | ⚠️ Join-based | ⚠️ Application-driven | ⚠️ Limited |
| 📝 Dedicated graph query language | ✅ Cypher | ❌ | ❌ | ❌ |
| 📊 Relational workloads | ⚠️ | ✅ Excellent | ⚠️ | ❌ |
| 📄 Document workloads | ⚠️ | ✅ JSON support | ✅ Excellent | ❌ |
| ⚡ In-memory caching | ❌ | ❌ | ❌ | ✅ Excellent |
| 🧠 Knowledge graphs | ✅ Excellent | ⚠️ | ⚠️ | ❌ |
| 🤖 GraphRAG | ✅ Excellent | ⚠️ | ⚠️ | ❌ |
| 🎯 Recommendation relationships | ✅ Excellent | ⚠️ | ⚠️ | ⚠️ |
| 🔎 Deep relationship queries | ✅ | ⚠️ | ⚠️ | ❌ |

## Which One Should You Use?

| Database | Best Choice When |
|---|---|
| **Neo4j** | ✅ Relationships and graph traversal are central to your application |
| **PostgreSQL** | ✅ Your workload is primarily relational and transactional |
| **MongoDB** | ✅ Your data naturally fits flexible document structures |
| **Redis** | ✅ You primarily need caching, queues, sessions, or fast in-memory data |

Neo4j should not replace a relational database simply because graph databases are interesting. It provides the most value when relationship traversal is genuinely a core part of the workload.

## Public Access and Security

This template exposes both the Neo4j web interface and Bolt connectivity through public Railway endpoints.

| Endpoint | Exposure |
|---|---|
| Neo4j Browser / HTTP | 🌐 Public |
| Neo4j Bolt / TCP | 🌐 Public |
| Authentication | 🔐 Enabled |

Because the Bolt endpoint is publicly reachable, follow basic database security practices:

- ✅ Keep the generated administrator password private
- ✅ Use a strong and unique password
- ✅ Do not publish database credentials in repositories or client-side applications
- ✅ Rotate credentials if they are exposed
- ✅ Only provide database access to trusted applications and users
- ✅ Remove unnecessary public connectivity if the database no longer needs external access
- ✅ Prefer private networking when applications run within the same Railway environment

For applications deployed inside Railway, private networking is generally preferable to routing database traffic through the public TCP endpoint.

## Important Usage Notes

| Consideration | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| 💾 Persistence | Keep database storage persistent across redeployments |
| 🔐 Credentials | Store database credentials securely |
| 🌐 Public Bolt access | Expose only when external applications require it |
| 🔌 Application connections | Use the Bolt endpoint for Neo4j drivers |
| 📝 Queries | Use Cypher for graph queries and mutations |
| 📈 Resources | Monitor memory usage as graph datasets grow |
| 📦 Backups | Maintain backups of important production data |
| 🧠 Data modeling | Design nodes and relationships around real traversal patterns |
