## Documentation

# Deploy and Host Next.js with Railway

[Next.js](https://nextjs.org) is the React framework for full-stack web apps. This template deploys a minimal Next.js 16.4 starter with the App Router, React 19, [Tailwind CSS 4](https://tailwindcss.com), and [shadcn/ui](https://ui.shadcn.com), ready for you to build on.

## About Hosting Next.js

Next.js runs on Railway as a single Node.js service. Railway builds it with Railpack (`npm run build`), starts it with `npm start`, and routes traffic to the `PORT` it provides. Server Components, Route Handlers, Cache Components, and image optimization all run in the same service, with no adapter needed. The template generates a public domain and gates each deploy on a `/api/health` healthcheck, so a broken build never replaces a working one. Push to your repo and Railway redeploys automatically.

## Common Use Cases

- Marketing sites, blogs, and personal projects
- AI and LLM apps built with the AI SDK
- Full-stack apps paired with Railway Postgres or Redis
- Internal tools and dashboards

## Dependencies for Next.js Hosting

- Node.js 24
- Next.js 16.4, React 19.3
- Tailwind CSS 4.3, shadcn/ui (Radix)

### Deployment Dependencies

- [Next.js documentation](https://nextjs.org/docs)
- [Railway Next.js guide](https://docs.railway.com/guides/nextjs)
- [shadcn/ui components](https://ui.shadcn.com/docs/components)

### Implementation Details

- **Healthcheck:** `app/api/health/route.ts` returns `200` once the server is ready.
- **Fonts:** Geist is bundled from npm, so builds don't fetch from Google Fonts.
- **Live deployment card:** The home page reads `RAILWAY_*` variables at request time to show the service, region, and commit that's serving traffic.
- **Add components:** `npx shadcn@latest add dialog input`
