# Deploy and Host Rustic with Railway

Rustic is an open-source, agentic code editor written in Rust. Rustic Server runs the same Rust core as the desktop app headlessly and serves the full IDE — editor, terminals, file tree, git and a first-class AI agent — to any browser, including a purpose-built phone layout.

## About Hosting Rustic

This template deploys a single `rustic-server` service built from the [avijitbhuin21/Rustic](https://github.com/avijitbhuin21/Rustic) Dockerfile. The image bundles the Rust server, the web UI, git, node/npx and uv/uvx (for MCP servers), headless Chromium for the agent's browser, and Go/Rust/Bun/TypeScript toolchains. A persistent volume is mounted at `/data` so projects, chats, settings and browser logins survive redeploys, and a public HTTPS domain is generated for you.

A strong login password (`RUSTIC_AUTH_PASSWORD`) and session secret (`RUSTIC_SESSION_SECRET`) are generated fresh for every deploy — find the password in the service's **Variables** tab, then open your domain and log in. Add your AI provider API keys (Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, OpenRouter or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint) in Rustic's Settings; they stay on your server.

## Common Use Cases

- Code from your phone or tablet: start an agent task at your desk, check on it from anywhere, approve the fix on mobile.
- Keep long-running agent tasks going after your laptop sleeps — they run on the server, not your machine.
- A full IDE on locked-down or low-powered machines where you can't install anything.
- Auto-fix GitHub issues: point a webhook at your server and new issues spawn a fixer task that commits locally.

## Dependencies for Rustic Hosting

- An API key for at least one AI provider (added in Rustic's Settings after login).
- Nothing else — git, toolchains, Chromium and MCP runtimes are baked into the image.

- Server docs: https://github.com/avijitbhuin21/Rustic/blob/main/rustic-server/README.md

### Implementation Details

- `RUSTIC_AUTH_PASSWORD` — login password (generated; change it any time in Variables).
- `RUSTIC_SESSION_SECRET` — signs session tokens so logins survive restarts (generated).
- `RUSTIC_DATA_DIR=/data` — backed by the attached volume.
- The server listens on Railway's `$PORT`; `/healthz` is the healthcheck.

## Why Deploy Rustic on Railway?

Railway is a singular platform to deploy your infrastructure stack. Railway will host your infrastructure so you don't have to deal with configuration, while allowing you to vertically and horizontally scale it.

By deploying Rustic on Railway, you are one step closer to supporting a complete full-stack application with minimal burden. Host your servers, databases, AI agents, and more on Railway.
