## Documentation

# Deploy and Host Vaultwarden on Railway

[Vaultwarden](https://github.com/dani-garcia/vaultwarden) is a lightweight, Bitwarden-compatible server for storing passwords, notes and secrets. It works with the official Bitwarden browser extensions, desktop and mobile apps.

## About Hosting Vaultwarden

This template runs the official `vaultwarden/server:latest` image with a persistent volume at `/data`, so your vault database and attachments survive redeploys. It uses the built-in SQLite database, so no separate database service is needed. The server's domain is set to your Railway public URL, and a random admin token is generated for you. On first visit, create your account with Create account. Open the service's Variables tab in Railway to read `ADMIN_TOKEN` and sign in at `/admin` with it. Once your own account exists, open the admin page and turn off Allow new signups so strangers cannot register on your server.

## Common Use Cases

- A private password manager for yourself, family or a small team
- Use the official Bitwarden apps and browser extensions against your own server
- Share logins with organizations and collections

## Dependencies for Vaultwarden Hosting

- One service with a volume; nothing else

## Why Deploy Vaultwarden on Railway?

Railway gives you a public HTTPS URL (which the Bitwarden web vault requires), a persistent volume and automatic restarts with no server to maintain. Keep a backup of your vault export, since the data lives on this one volume.
