## Documentation

# Deploy and Host wallabag on Railway

[wallabag](https://github.com/wallabag/wallabag) is a self-hosted read-it-later app. Save any web page and wallabag extracts the article, so you can read it later without ads or clutter. It has apps for Android and iOS, browser extensions, an e-reader integration (KOReader, Kobo), and imports from Pocket, Instapaper, Pinboard and others.

## About Hosting wallabag

This template runs the official `wallabag/wallabag` image (nginx + PHP-FPM) with Railway Postgres. On every deploy, a pre-deploy step runs the database migrations. On the first deploy it installs wallabag and creates your admin account from `ADMIN_USERNAME`, `ADMIN_EMAIL` and `ADMIN_PASSWORD`. wallabag's well-known default `wallabag`/`wallabag` login is removed. You can log in right away, with no shell. Public sign-up is off.

## Common Use Cases

- Replace Pocket: import your Pocket export and keep reading.
- Save articles from your phone or browser, then read them on a Kobo or other e-reader.
- Keep a searchable, tagged archive of everything you've read.

## Dependencies for wallabag Hosting

- PostgreSQL (included)

### Implementation Details

| Variable | Default | Notes |
| ------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------ | -------------------------------------------- |
| `ADMIN_USERNAME` | `admin` | Admin login |
| `ADMIN_EMAIL` | (you set it) | Admin email |
| `ADMIN_PASSWORD` | random | Copy it from the service's Variables tab |
| `SYMFONY__ENV__DOMAIN_NAME` | `https://${{RAILWAY_PUBLIC_DOMAIN}}` | Change it if you add a custom domain |
| `SYMFONY__ENV__FOSUSER_REGISTRATION` | `false` | Set `true` to allow public sign-up |
| `SYMFONY__ENV__MAILER_DSN` | `null://null` (no email) | e.g. `smtp://user:pass@smtp.example.com:587` |
| `PHP_MEMORY_LIMIT` | `256M` | Raise it if large imports fail |

- The admin is set up on the first deploy only. Changing `ADMIN_*` later does nothing; change the password in the UI.
- Mobile apps: create an API client in **Developer → Create a new client**, then use your Railway URL, the client ID/secret and your login.
- Imports run in the web request (no Redis worker), which keeps the template to two services. Very large imports may need a few attempts.
- Healthcheck: Railway probes `/api/info`, which needs no login.

## Why Deploy wallabag on Railway?

Railway is a single platform for deploying your whole stack: servers, databases, AI agents and more. It handles the infrastructure, so you don't have to manage servers or configure scaling.

When you deploy wallabag on Railway, you're one step closer to running your full stack with minimal effort. Host your servers, databases, AI agents and more on Railway.
