Deploy and Host atproto-qr.app on Railway

atproto-qr.app is a QR code studio where saved codes live as atproto records in your own PDS, not on someone else's server. Design styled codes, then sign in with a Bluesky or any atproto handle to keep them editable, restyle them, and rename them without breaking printed copies.

About Hosting atproto-qr.app

Hosting is a static build. Railpack runs the Vite build and Caddy serves dist/ with an SPA fallback and a /health endpoint, so there is no database, no worker, and no server-side state. The one value you must set is VITE_DOMAIN, the exact origin visitors will use, because the OAuth client metadata and the origin baked into every QR code are generated at build time. Add VITE_OWNER_HANDLE to run as a personal instance on a short domain like qr.yourname.dev, then redeploy after changing either value. Leave it unset and you get the multi-user app with per-handle URLs instead.

Common Use Cases

  • Personal QR links on your own short domain, e.g. qr.yourname.dev/#menu
  • Printable codes for menus, posters, packaging, and business cards
  • Codes whose destination you can edit later without reprinting

Dependencies for atproto-qr.app Hosting

  • A Railway service. No database or object storage is required.
  • An atproto account (Bluesky or any PDS) to save and edit codes
  • A domain mapped to the service, ideally a short subdomain

Implementation Details

VITE_DOMAIN=https://qr.example.com # required, the origin users visit
VITE_OWNER_HANDLE=you.example.com # optional, personal instance mode

Both are build-time values, so a change needs a redeploy. Do not add a start command: the template has none on purpose so Railpack serves the static build. In personal mode codes resolve from /#name (#name/edit to edit), non-owner sign-ins hand off to atproto-qr.app, and records are never copied between instances.
