Deploy and Host Grafana on Railway

Grafana is the open-source standard for visualizing and alerting on operational data. It turns metrics, logs, and traces from many sources into rich, interactive dashboards. This template runs Grafana OSS on Railway with persistent storage and HTTPS, ready to use right after deploy.

About Hosting Grafana

Hosting Grafana yourself gives you full control over your dashboards, data sources, users, and alert rules without per-seat pricing or vendor lock-in. Grafana connects to Prometheus, Loki, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, CloudWatch, and many more back ends, then renders time-series panels, tables, heatmaps, and alerts in one place. On Railway the service boots behind managed HTTPS and stores its database and installed plugins on a persistent volume, so dashboards, users, and settings survive restarts and redeploys. The first boot runs database migrations and installs the bundled plugins, which takes about a minute before the login page is ready.

Common Use Cases

  • Monitoring application and infrastructure metrics from Prometheus or other time-series sources
  • Building shared team dashboards for business, product, or operational analytics
  • Centralizing logs and traces alongside metrics for faster incident investigation

Dependencies for Grafana Hosting

  • A persistent volume for the Grafana data directory that holds dashboards, users, plugins, and the database
  • One or more external data sources to visualize, added from the Grafana interface after deploy

Deployment Dependencies

Implementation Details

This template pins Grafana OSS 13.0.2 and mounts a persistent volume at the Grafana data directory. Railway mounts volumes owned by the root user, so the deploy form asks for a RAILWAY_RUN_UID value and you should enter 0, which lets Grafana write to its data directory. The default sign-in uses the user name admin and the password admin, and Grafana requires a password change on the first login. Set a strong password right away and keep new-user sign-up disabled whenever the dashboard is reachable on a public URL.
