Deploy and Host a Railway IaC Job Processing Example
Deploy a Node.js web API, PostgreSQL, a background worker, and a daily summary cron service together on Railway.
About Hosting the Job Processing Example
The web API accepts empty demonstration jobs at POST /jobs. A worker atomically marks jobs complete in PostgreSQL; GET /jobs/ID reports their state. The summary service logs completed job count daily at 02:00 UTC and exits. All three application services connect through the database's private DATABASE_URL reference.
The repository includes .railway/railway.ts so you can inspect and manage the stack's desired configuration through Railway Infrastructure as Code. Template deployment provisions the captured project configuration; it does not require running the authoring file yourself.
Why Deploy the Job Processing Example on Railway?
Keep a web app, database, worker, and cron task in one project with private service connections, distinct start commands, a migration step, and a deployment healthcheck. Use the example to understand Railway's multi-service configuration workflow.
Common Use Cases
- Learning project-level Infrastructure as Code.
- Starting a small Node.js and PostgreSQL service topology.
- Demonstrating workers and periodic database reports.
Dependencies for the Job Processing Example
Node.js 22 or newer, PostgreSQL, the pg package, and the Railway TypeScript authoring SDK. Railway builds the application from the public companion GitHub repository.
Deployment Dependencies
A Railway account and capacity to run the services. No external API keys are required. The web service runs npm run migrate before deployment; worker and summary wait for the schema. Expose only the web service through a generated Railway domain.
The API is an unauthenticated demonstration, and the worker performs a no-op state transition. Add endpoint authentication, rate limiting, real job retries and idempotency, monitoring, and an appropriate database backup/recovery configuration before production use. Running resources and storage incur Railway usage charges.
