Deploy and Host Maxun on Railway
Maxun is an open source, no-code web data extraction platform. Record a robot by clicking through a site in a live browser, then run it on demand, on a schedule, or through the REST API and SDK to get lists, text, markdown, HTML and screenshots back. Plain scraping needs no API keys; AI features (LLM robots, Smart Query, summaries) can use Anthropic, OpenAI or Ollama.
About Hosting Maxun
This template runs the full Maxun stack on Railway behind a single public Caddy gateway. Maxun has no setting to turn off public sign up, and any signed in user can make the server fetch any URL, so the gateway asks for a username and password before anyone can see the app or register. Without it, anyone who finds the domain could use your instance as a scraping proxy. The REST API under /api skips the prompt because it already requires a Maxun API key.
First steps after deploy:
- Open the maxun-gateway service, copy
UI_USERNAMEandUI_PASSWORDfrom its Variables tab, then open its public domain. - Enter those credentials in the browser prompt, then click Register in Maxun and create your account.
- Create a robot (Recorder or Scrape), run it, and view the results under Runs.
- For API access, open API Key in the Maxun menu, generate a key, and call
https:///api/...with thex-api-keyheader.
Common Use Cases
- Extract product lists, prices or listings from sites without writing scraper code
- Turn web pages into markdown or HTML for LLM and RAG pipelines
- Schedule recurring scrapes and pull results through the REST API
Dependencies for Maxun Hosting
- maxun-gateway (Caddy): the only public service; UI, API and run screenshots on one domain behind a login prompt.
- maxun-backend: the Maxun API, run queue and scheduler (private).
- maxun-frontend: the Maxun web app (private).
- maxun-browser: a headless Chromium server that robots run in (private).
- RustFS: S3 compatible storage for screenshots and uploaded documents, with a volume (private).
- Postgres: users, robots, runs and the job queue, with a volume.

Key Variables
| Service | Variable | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| maxun-gateway | UI_USERNAME, UI_PASSWORD | Login prompt in front of the whole app |
| maxun-backend | JWT_SECRET, ENCRYPTION_KEY, SESSION_SECRET | Generated secrets. Never rotate ENCRYPTION_KEY after saving proxy or LLM credentials |
| maxun-backend | ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, OPENAI_API_KEY, OLLAMA_BASE_URL | Optional, for AI features |
| maxun-backend | MAXUN_TELEMETRY | Upstream telemetry, off by default |
| maxun-backend | WORKER_CONCURRENCY | How many robot runs execute at once (default 10) |
Notes: needs the Hobby plan or higher (the backend and the browser each want more than 1 GB of RAM under load). RustFS stands in for MinIO, whose images are no longer published. Google Sheets and Airtable integrations need your own OAuth apps (optional variables on maxun-backend).
Why Deploy Maxun on Railway?
Railway is a singular platform to deploy your infrastructure stack. Railway will host your infrastructure so you don't have to deal with configuration, while allowing you to vertically and horizontally scale it.
By deploying Maxun on Railway, you are one step closer to supporting a complete full-stack application with minimal burden. Host your servers, databases, AI agents, and more on Railway.
