Deploy and Host Redash on Railway (self hosted SQL dashboards and BI)
Redash is an open source business intelligence tool built for people who write SQL. You connect a data source, write a query, turn the result into a chart, combine charts into dashboards, schedule refreshes and send alerts to Slack or email. No semantic layer to model and no drag-and-drop builder to learn: if you know SQL, you are productive in minutes. This template deploys the full self hosted Redash stack on Railway in one click, already wired and ready for your first query.
About Hosting Redash (Redash Docker, self hosted)
Redash is not a single container. A production Redash installation runs the same redash/redash image as several services with different roles: a web server for the UI and API, a scheduler that enqueues periodic work, and workers that execute queries, refresh schemas and evaluate alerts. It also needs PostgreSQL to store queries, dashboards, users and cached results, and Redis as the job broker.
Wiring all of that by hand, with the right secrets, queues and connection strings, is where most self hosted Redash attempts stall. This template provisions every service, connects them over Railway's private network, generates the secrets and exposes Redash on an HTTPS domain.
This template includes: Database, Workers, Schedules and Redash Server.
Why Deploy Redash on Railway
Railway bills by resource usage, not by seat, so you can invite your whole team and share dashboards with every stakeholder without per-user licensing. You get the complete open source Redash with no feature limits and no servers to maintain.
| Option | With Redash on Railway | With the other option |
|---|---|---|
| Metabase Cloud | Unlimited users at infrastructure cost | Managed, priced by plan and user count |
| Power BI / Tableau | Open source, SQL-first, runs in the browser | Enterprise licensing per user, heavier tooling |
| Manual install (VPS) | Every service wired in one click | You set up Docker, queues, proxy, TLS and backups |
Common Use Cases for self hosted Redash
- Shared dashboards over production data without handing out database credentials.
- Scheduled operational reports: daily revenue, signups, churn, order volume, queue depth.
- Data quality alerts: a query that counts anomalies plus a threshold that pings Slack.
- Ad-hoc analysis with a fast SQL editor, schema browser and autocomplete.
- One query surface for many systems: Postgres, a warehouse and a Google Sheet side by side.
- Public or embedded dashboards shared by link with clients or the whole company.
Dependencies for Redash Hosting
Deployment Dependencies
- PostgreSQL for Redash metadata: queries, dashboards, users and cached results.
- Redis as the job queue between the web service, the scheduler and the workers.
- Worker and scheduler services running the same Redash image with different commands.
Implementation Details (environment variables)
| Variable | Purpose |
|---|---|
REDASH_SECRET_KEY | Encrypts data source credentials. Never change it after launch |
REDASH_COOKIE_SECRET | Signs sessions. Never change it after launch |
REDASH_DATABASE_URL | Metadata database, wired automatically |
REDASH_REDIS_URL | Job broker, wired automatically |
REDASH_HOST | Public URL used in alert and email links |
REDASH_MAIL_* | SMTP settings for email alerts and invites |
Redash vs other BI and dashboard tools
Redash vs Metabase (Metabase alternative): Metabase is built for non-technical users with a point-and-click question builder. Redash is SQL-first. If the people building dashboards write SQL, Redash has less friction and fewer abstractions in the way.
Redash vs Apache Superset (Superset alternative): Superset has a larger chart library and a semantic layer, at the cost of a heavier deployment and a steeper learning curve. Redash is lighter and faster to adopt for small teams.
Redash vs Grafana (Grafana alternative): Grafana shines at time-series and infrastructure monitoring. Redash is built for business and transactional data in relational databases and warehouses.
Redash vs Looker Studio, Power BI and Tableau: these are proprietary and priced per user or tied to one vendor ecosystem. Self hosted Redash is open source, runs in the browser and has no seat limits.
Redash features explained
- SQL editor with schema browser, autocomplete, query snippets and keyboard shortcuts.
- Query parameters: turn any query into a filterable report with dropdowns, dates and text inputs.
- Visualizations: charts, tables, pivot tables, counters, funnels, cohorts, maps, sankey and more.
- Dashboards that combine visualizations from many queries and data sources.
- Scheduled refreshes per query, from every few minutes to weekly.
- Alerts to email, Slack, webhooks and other destinations when a result crosses a threshold.
- Query Results data source to join the output of queries from different databases.
- Groups and permissions controlling which data sources each team can query or only view.
- REST API for fetching query results and automating Redash from other tools.
Supported data sources
PostgreSQL, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, ClickHouse, Databricks, Athena, Trino and Presto, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, Google Sheets, CSV and JSON URLs, and many more. Any database reachable over the network can be connected, inside or outside Railway.
How to use Redash after deploying
- Open the public domain of the Redash web service.
- Complete the setup page to create the admin account and organization. There are no default credentials, so do this right after deploying.
- Add a data source in Settings → Data Sources. Use a read-only database user.
- Write your first query, add a visualization and save it.
- Build a dashboard, set refresh schedules and create alerts.
Is Redash free? (license and pricing)
Redash is open source under the BSD 2-Clause license and free to self host with no user or feature limits. The original hosted Redash service was discontinued, so self hosting is the way to run Redash today. You pay only for the infrastructure.
Monthly cost of self hosting Redash on Railway
A typical Redash project on Railway costs around $3-5 per month with usage-based billing. Cost grows with the number of workers, how often queries refresh and how large the result sets are, not with the number of users.
Troubleshooting self hosted Redash
Queries stay queued forever: the workers are not running or cannot reach Redis. The web service alone does not execute queries.
Scheduled queries do not refresh: the scheduler service is down. It is separate from the workers.
"relation does not exist" on first access: the metadata database was not initialized before the first boot.
Data sources fail after a redeploy: REDASH_SECRET_KEY changed, so saved credentials can no longer be decrypted. Keep it constant.
Alert and invite emails never arrive: the REDASH_MAIL_* variables are missing or REDASH_HOST is not set to your public URL.
Slow dashboards: every widget runs its own query. Cache results with scheduled refreshes, reduce widget count or add workers.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Is Redash still maintained? Yes. The open source project continues to publish new releases.
Is Redash free? Yes. Self hosted Redash is open source (BSD 2-Clause) with no user or feature limits.
How many users can Redash have? There is no seat limit. You are limited only by your infrastructure.
Can Redash connect to a database outside Railway? Yes, any database reachable over the network.
Does Redash support Slack alerts? Yes. Alerts can notify Slack, email, webhooks and other destinations.
Is Redash a good Metabase alternative? Yes, when dashboard builders write SQL. Metabase is better for teams that need a no-code question builder.
Can I share Redash dashboards publicly? Yes. Dashboards can be shared through a public link, with no login required for viewers.
