Deploy and Host MCP Servers on Railway
A Model Context Protocol (MCP) gateway that bundles multiple MCP servers behind a single HTTP endpoint. It exposes AI tools — web fetching, persistent memory, and sequential thinking — over SSE and Streamable HTTP transports for remote access.
About Hosting MCP Servers
MCP servers typically run locally alongside AI clients, limiting them to a single machine. This template deploys an mcp-proxy gateway that wraps multiple MCP servers and exposes them over HTTP, making them accessible from anywhere. It bundles three servers out of the box: a web fetch server for retrieving URLs, a memory server backed by a persistent knowledge graph on a volume, and a sequential-thinking server for structured chain-of-thought reasoning. The gateway runs on a single port and supports both SSE and Streamable HTTP transports. You can extend it by adding additional MCP servers to the configuration.
Common Use Cases
- Giving AI assistants like Claude Desktop or Cursor access to web fetching and persistent memory from any machine
- Sharing a single MCP gateway across a team instead of running local servers on every developer's machine
- Hosting custom MCP tool servers that AI agents can call remotely as part of automated workflows
Dependencies for MCP Server Hosting
- No external dependencies required

Implementation Details
The gateway uses mcp-proxy to expose child-process MCP servers over HTTP. Server configuration lives in servers.json:
{
"mcpServers": {
"fetch": {
"command": "uvx",
"args": ["mcp-server-fetch"]
},
"memory": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-memory"]
}
}
}
To connect from Claude Desktop, add the Railway URL as a remote MCP server endpoint.
Resource Usage
This template deploys 1 service with a persistent volume. Resource usage scales with the number of connected AI clients and tool invocations — expect minimal costs at idle.
Why Deploy MCP Servers on Railway?
Railway is a singular platform to deploy your infrastructure stack. Railway will host your infrastructure so you don't have to deal with configuration, while allowing you to vertically and horizontally scale it.
By deploying MCP Servers on Railway, you are one step closer to supporting a complete full-stack application with minimal burden. Host your servers, databases, AI agents, and more on Railway.
