Deploy and Host Microsoft Edge on Railway

Microsoft Edge is a Chromium-based web browser developed by Microsoft, offering modern web compatibility, performance, and productivity features. This Railway template runs Microsoft Edge in a cloud-hosted Linux environment using the official LinuxServer.io Docker image, providing browser-based remote desktop access, persistent user profiles, and an accessible workspace from virtually any device.

About Hosting Microsoft Edge

Hosting Microsoft Edge on Railway allows you to run a complete browser desktop in the cloud without managing a virtual machine, configuring a desktop environment, or maintaining a custom Docker repository.

This template uses the official LinuxServer.io Microsoft Edge Docker image, powered by Selkies for browser-based desktop streaming. Railway handles container deployment, networking, and HTTPS termination, while a persistent volume preserves browser settings, bookmarks, and local files across deployments.

The deployment supports configurable authentication, shared memory allocation, and browser launch options. It requires no external database or additional services, making it suitable for remote browsing, browser compatibility testing, and personal cloud workspaces.

Common Use Cases

  • Cloud Browser Workspace: Run Microsoft Edge remotely and access your desktop browser from different devices.
  • Web Application Testing: Test websites and applications using Microsoft Edge in a cloud-hosted Linux environment.
  • Persistent Browsing Sessions: Preserve bookmarks, browser extensions, preferences, and local files across redeployments.
  • Remote Development Tools: Access web-based IDEs, dashboards, and development environments from a remote browser.
  • Browser Isolation: Separate browser activity from your local operating system, subject to appropriate container isolation and access controls.
  • Remote Desktop Access: Interact with a graphical desktop through Selkies without installing a separate remote desktop client.

Dependencies for Microsoft Edge Hosting

  • Docker Image: lscr.io/linuxserver/msedge:latest — official LinuxServer.io Microsoft Edge container.
  • Selkies: Integrated browser-based desktop streaming environment.
  • Persistent Storage: Railway volume mounted at /config to preserve browser profiles, settings, and files.
  • Shared Memory: Recommended 1 GB shared memory allocation for Chromium-based browser operation.
  • Networking: Railway-generated HTTPS domain forwarding to container port 3000.

No PostgreSQL, Redis, or additional database services are required.

Persistent Storage

Mount a Railway volume at:

/config

This directory stores the browser's user profile, bookmarks, extensions, preferences, and local files. Data remains available across container restarts and redeployments as long as the persistent volume is retained.

Accessing Microsoft Edge

  1. Deploy the template to your Railway project.
  2. Open the generated Railway HTTPS domain.
  3. Enter the configured CUSTOM_USER and PASSWORD credentials.
  4. Access the Microsoft Edge desktop through your web browser.
  5. Start browsing and customize your persistent browser environment.

Security Considerations

The LinuxServer.io desktop container can provide powerful access to its container environment. Built-in HTTP Basic Authentication is intended for trusted networks and should not be considered sufficient protection for an internet-facing desktop.

For publicly accessible deployments, use a robust authentication gateway, restrict access to trusted users, and avoid using the browser for highly sensitive operations without additional security controls.

Resource Recommendations

Microsoft Edge is resource-intensive compared with typical lightweight web services. Allocate at least 2 GB of memory as an initial recommendation, monitor actual usage, and increase resources when running multiple tabs or demanding web applications.

GPU acceleration is optional and is not configured by this Railway template. Browser rendering performance depends on available CPU resources.

Microsoft Edge is especially useful when you need a Chromium-based browsing environment with Microsoft Edge-specific behavior and compatibility.

Chromium is a strong alternative for a more generic Chromium environment, while Firefox provides an independent browser engine for cross-browser testing.

Why Deploy Microsoft Edge on Railway?

Railway is a singular platform to deploy your infrastructure stack. Railway will host your infrastructure so you don't have to deal with configuration, while allowing you to vertically and horizontally scale it.

By deploying Microsoft Edge on Railway, you are one step closer to supporting a complete full-stack application with minimal burden. Host your servers, databases, AI agents, and more on Railway.
