Deploy and Host n8n with PostgreSQL & Durable Storage on Railway
Workflow automation with private Postgres, durable files and webhook URLs.
About Hosting n8n with PostgreSQL & Durable Storage
Deploying this template creates Postgres, n8n in your Railway project. The application receives an HTTPS domain automatically. Database and Redis services, when included, use private networking and generated credentials. Persistent data is stored on the included volumes or object storage, so application redeploys do not discard it.
Why Deploy n8n with PostgreSQL & Durable Storage on Railway
- Private PostgreSQL stores workflows and credentials.
- A persistent n8n volume stores local state and binary files.
- The encryption key is generated per installation; HTTPS webhook and editor URLs follow the generated Railway domain.
- Execution history is pruned after seven days or 5,000 executions to limit database growth.
Common Use Cases
- Connect sales, support and internal tools with webhook workflows.
- Schedule reports, imports and document processing.
- Build automation that retains workflow credentials and binary files across redeploys.
Dependencies for n8n with PostgreSQL & Durable Storage
- A Railway account and a plan with capacity for 2 service(s).
- Included services: Postgres, n8n.
- 2 persistent volume(s), provisioned by this template.
- External integrations, mail delivery and your own business data are configured after installation as needed.
First launch
- Deploy the template and wait for PostgreSQL and n8n to become ready.
- Open the generated n8n domain and create your owner account immediately.
- Connect your integrations and activate your first workflow. No external API keys are needed to boot.
- If you add a custom domain, update N8N_HOST, N8N_EDITOR_BASE_URL and WEBHOOK_URL to match.
Operations
Back up PostgreSQL and the n8n volume together, and retain N8N_ENCRYPTION_KEY. This is a single-instance installation; queue mode requires a separate worker/Redis architecture. Change GENERIC_TIMEZONE for scheduled workflows. Railway volume permissions require the included RAILWAY_RUN_UID setting.
Images are pinned to verified upstream image digests captured on 2026-10-17. Review upstream release notes, back up persistent data and update the image deliberately when upgrading. Railway charges the deployer for running services, storage and network usage.
