Deploy and Host pluto on Railway

Pluto is a self-contained data notebook for TypeScript and SQL. One binary bundles a TypeScript/JavaScript kernel, Postgres, SQLite, DuckDB and Polars, with a browser UI that has type-aware completions. Query CSV and Parquet files, mix SQL with code, render tables and HTML, and drive it from AI agents over MCP.

About Hosting pluto

Pluto ships as a single Docker image (ghcr.io/junkiez/pluto) with no external services: every database engine is embedded and stores its data next to the notebook files. Hosting it needs one service with a persistent volume mounted at /data, where notebooks, Postgres/SQLite/DuckDB databases and uploaded files live. Set PLUTO_PASS to protect the instance, since notebook cells run arbitrary code. Railway provides PORT automatically. Redeploys keep all notebooks and data on the volume.

Common Use Cases

  • Exploring CSV, Parquet and JSON data with DuckDB, Polars and SQL, mixing queries with TypeScript in one notebook
  • Hosted scratchpad for prototyping data pipelines, API calls and quick reports with tables and HTML output
  • Giving AI agents (Claude, Cursor, etc.) a sandboxed place to run code and SQL through the built-in MCP endpoint

Dependencies for pluto Hosting

  • A Railway volume mounted at /data (notebooks and databases)
  • PLUTO_PASS variable (password for the UI and MCP)

Service variables: PLUTO_PASS=

Open the app via a shared link that skips the login prompt:

Connect an MCP client (e.g. Claude Code):

claude mcp add --transport http pluto https://.up.railway.app/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer "

## Why Deploy pluto on Railway?

Railway is a singular platform to deploy your infrastructure stack. Railway will host your infrastructure so you don't have to deal with configuration, while allowing you to vertically and horizontally scale it.

By deploying pluto on Railway, you are one step closer to supporting a complete full-stack application with minimal burden. Host your servers, databases, AI agents, and more on Railway.
