Deploy and Host Storypane on Railway
A collaborative, open-source CMS for the websites you build. Give editors structured pages, live previews, shared editing, and scheduled releases. Give developers linked dev spaces for schema changes and reviewed promotion to production.
About Hosting Storypane
This template provisions Storypane, PostgreSQL, and a private media bucket in your Railway workspace. The application creates a separate database and role for each space. No Clerk account, SMTP service, or terminal setup is required.
Why Deploy Storypane on Railway
Keep the editor, database, and original media in your own workspace. Service references, independent secrets, transactional migrations, and the first administrator are configured automatically.
Common Use Cases
- Marketing and editorial websites with reusable blocks and live previews.
- Teams that separate content editing in production from schema development in linked dev spaces.
- Astro, Next.js, and other frontends using a typed delivery SDK.
Dependencies for Storypane
The template provides the Node application, PostgreSQL 18, and a private S3-compatible Railway bucket.
Deployment Dependencies
A Railway account and workspace with sufficient resources and billing enabled. Supply the initial administrator details privately. Clerk, SMTP, and an external image CDN are optional.
Get started
- Enter your name, email, and a unique administrator password of 12–128 characters in the Storypane service’s required variables.
- Deploy and wait for Storypane to become healthy. Open its generated public URL and sign in with those credentials.
- Create a Production space for content editors, then clone a linked Development space for each developer. Keep the production schema read-only; iterate and promote from dev.
- Remove
STORYPANE_ADMIN_NAME,STORYPANE_ADMIN_EMAIL, andSTORYPANE_ADMIN_PASSWORDafter signing in. Redeploys preserve existing accounts and never reset their passwords. Keep all generated database passwords and encryption keys.
Follow the setup guide, team workflow, and editor quickstart.
Images and hosting
Original uploads stay private. Storypane handles authorized image resizing, focal crops, and compression on the app server. Cloudflare edge image optimization is optional and requires separate setup; this template does not provision it.
Keep one app replica with sleeping disabled for in-memory collaboration and scheduled work. Railway hosting and storage charges apply. Back up the installation database, every space database, original media, and encryption keys before upgrades. Do not recreate storage to troubleshoot an error.
Release candidate
The template builds the public repository’s main branch, including automatic installation setup added after rc.2. It is an evaluation deployment, not a pinned stable release or a production-readiness promise. Review the recorded hosted checks and remaining acceptance before production use.
