Deploy and Host a Telegram Bot on Railway
A minimal Telegram bot in Python on the official Bot API, with python-telegram-bot 22 and long polling, so there is no domain or webhook to set up. When the token is wrong, the log says so in one sentence.
Paste one value: the bot token from @BotFather.
About Hosting a Telegram Bot
One service, built from ak40u/telegram-bot-python-railway-starter:
- Telegram Bot: polls the Bot API for updates and answers
/start,/helpand any text with an echo. No public domain, because long polling needs none.
To get a token, open @BotFather in Telegram, send /newbot, and copy the token it gives you. After the deploy the log prints Logged in as @yourbot; open the bot and send /start.
Common Use Cases
- A starting point for your own bot: add handlers in
main.pyfor commands, buttons and inline queries. - Notifications from your services to a chat or channel.
- Small tools for a group: reminders, polls, lookups.
Dependencies for Telegram Bot Hosting
Deployment Dependencies
- Python 3.13 and python-telegram-bot 22.8, LGPL-3.0, built from the starter repository's Dockerfile
- A bot token from @BotFather
Implementation Details
- The log shows why a bot is silent. The common Python starter prints an error on a bad token and then sleeps forever, but Python buffers standard output when it is not a terminal, so that error never reaches the log: the deploy is green, the log says only
Starting Container, and the bot never answers. Here output is unbuffered. - The token is checked before polling starts. A missing token and a token Telegram rejects each get one plain sentence saying where to fix it, and the process exits with an error, so the deploy shows as crashed rather than green. The rejected token is not echoed into the log.
- A second copy is named. Telegram lets only one process poll a token at a time; if another copy of the bot is running, the log says so instead of repeating an error.
- The start command is in the Dockerfile, not in
railway.json, which Railway no longer reads for services created from a template.
Configuration
TELEGRAM_BOT_TOKEN is the only setting. To change the bot's name, picture or description, use @BotFather.
Verification
Deployed from this template into an empty project: the image builds from the repository, and without a token the bot stops with TELEGRAM_BOT_TOKEN is not set and where to get one. With a token Telegram rejects, it stops with Telegram rejected the token and the token does not appear in the log; both checked on Railway. A conversation with a real bot was not part of testing.
Why Deploy a Telegram Bot on Railway?
Railway is a singular platform to deploy your infrastructure stack. Railway will host your infrastructure so you don't have to deal with configuration, while allowing you to vertically and horizontally scale it.
By deploying a Telegram Bot on Railway, you are one step closer to supporting a complete full-stack application with minimal burden. Host your servers, databases, AI agents, and more on Railway.
