Deploy and Host self hosted Yuvomi (Family Planner) on Railway

This template deploys Yuvomi, an open-source, self-hosted family planner, as a single service with one persistent volume.

About Hosting Yuvomi open-source software on Railway (self hosted Yuvomi template)

Yuvomi is an MIT-licensed family planner that bundles tasks, calendar, meals, shopping, budget and documents into one app.

Why Deploy Yuvomi, the open-source family planner on Railway (Railway Free Trial)

Cozi is a convenient hosted family organizer, but your household's calendar, lists and budget then live on someone else's servers under someone else's terms.

Railway is a singular platform to deploy your infrastructure stack. Railway will host your infrastructure so you don't have to deal with configuration, while allowing you to vertically and horizontally scale it.

By deploying Yuvomi on Railway, you are one step closer to supporting a complete full-stack application with minimal burden. Host your servers, databases, AI agents, and more on Railway.

Railway vs Other Hosting Providers and VPS for Yuvomi self hosting

Yuvomi runs as one container with one volume, so the choice mostly depends on how much setup you want to do yourself.

ProviderWhat You Get with RailwayWhat You Get with the Other Provider
DigitalOceanA managed service with HTTPS and a persistent volume, with no server to patch.A Droplet you control fully, but Docker, firewall, TLS and updates are yours to manage.
AWSOne service with a volume and public domain, without load balancers or IAM setup.Deep control over networking and storage, but far more setup for a small family app.
HetznerManaged deployment from the template, so there is no VPS to maintain.Low-cost hardware with root access, where Docker, backups and HTTPS are done by hand.

Pick Railway for a quick start, or a VPS if you want to own every layer.

Common Use Cases for hosted Yuvomi

  • A shared family task board with chores and reward points: Chores are tasks with an assignee, and ticking one off credits the points to whoever did it. Kids spend those points in a reward catalog you control.
  • One family calendar with Google and CalDAV sync: Connect the calendars your household already uses and keep them in step. Per-event visibility lets you share what everyone needs and keep the rest private.
  • Meal planning that exports to an aisle-sorted shopping list: Drag recipes into the weekly planner, then import the next seven days into the shared list. Items arrive sorted by aisle, so the shop follows the store layout.
  • A household budget with shared costs: Track income, expenses and savings goals, and split shared bills between members. Yuvomi simplifies the debts so nobody has to work out who owes whom.
  • A kitchen-wall tablet in wall mode: Put an old tablet on the kitchen wall to show today's plan and who is up. Tapping a task there credits the person who did it.

Dependencies for Yuvomi Docker hosted on Railway

This template deploys one Yuvomi service built from the onepush-dev image, which wraps the upstream ulsklyc/yuvomi 2.83.0 container.

Deployment Dependencies for Managed Yuvomi Service (Yuvomi app service with one volume)

The Yuvomi service needs one persistent volume at /data, which holds the database, nightly backups and uploaded documents.

VariablePurpose
SESSION_SECRETSigns login sessions. Generated as a 64 character secret.
DB_ENCRYPTION_KEYEncrypts the SQLCipher database. Generated as a 48 character secret.
YUVOMI_ADMIN_PASSWORDPassword for the admin account created on first start. Generated as a 20 character secret.
BASE_URLPublic address of the app, set to https://${{RAILWAY_PUBLIC_DOMAIN}}.

Implementation Details for Yuvomi (Using the onepush-dev image built on the upstream 2.83.0 image)

The image is ghcr.io/onepush-dev/yuvomi:2.83.0, built on ghcr.io/ulsklyc/yuvomi:2.83.0.

How does Yuvomi compare against other tools

Yuvomi vs Cozi (Cozi Alternative)

  • Hosting: Cozi is a hosted family organizer app. Yuvomi runs on a server you control, so the data stays with you.
  • Scope: Cozi covers shared lists and a calendar. Yuvomi adds tasks with rewards, meals, shopping and budget in one place.
  • Cost model: Yuvomi is MIT open source and free to self-host, so you pay only for the infrastructure.
  • Where Cozi wins: It needs no server and no upkeep, which suits households that want an app that works out of the box.

Yuvomi vs Nextcloud (Nextcloud Alternative)

  • Focus: Nextcloud is a self-hosted file and collaboration suite. Yuvomi is a dedicated family planner built for household routines.
  • Family workflow: Yuvomi offers per-member roles, a reward ledger for chores and a shopping list fed by the meal plan.
  • Where Nextcloud wins: For file sync, office documents and a broad app ecosystem, Nextcloud covers far more ground.

Yuvomi vs Grocy (Grocy Alternative)

  • Focus: Grocy is a self-hosted grocery and household management tool centered on stock. Yuvomi covers the pantry too, plus tasks, calendar, rewards and budget.
  • Shopping link: One import turns the week's meal plan into a shared shopping list sorted by aisle.
  • Where Grocy wins: For detailed stock tracking and inventory depth, Grocy is the more specialized tool.

Yuvomi with Docker Compose at home vs Yuvomi on Railway (Railway Alternative)

  • Setup: Docker Compose at home means you manage the host, proxy, HTTPS and updates. On Railway the template deploys with one volume and HTTPS already in place.
  • Data location: At home your data stays in your house. On Railway it stays on rented infrastructure, so back up and keep your DB_ENCRYPTION_KEY safe either way.
  • Reachability: A home install needs port forwarding or a tunnel for phones outside the house. Railway gives a public domain straight away, which push notifications need over HTTPS.

How to use Yuvomi on Railway?

  1. Wait for the Yuvomi service to turn green in the Railway dashboard. The first boot runs the database migrations, so give it a minute or two.
  2. Open the public domain Railway generated for the service. The sign-in page should load over HTTPS.
  3. Sign in as admin with the password stored in YUVOMI_ADMIN_PASSWORD. You can read it from the Variables tab of the service.
  4. Change the admin password straight away from your profile settings, so the generated one is no longer in use.
  5. Invite family members by invite link from Settings. Each link works for seven days, and each person picks their own password.
  6. Switch off any modules your household does not need, such as Inventory or Schedule. They disappear from everyone's menu.
  7. Add the app to your phone home screens from the browser, so it opens like an app.

Check that the server answers by running this from your terminal:

curl https://your-domain/health

A healthy instance returns a success response, and you are ready to start planning.

How to self host Yuvomi on other VPS Services (Yuvomi self hosting guide)

Clone the Repository

Start by downloading the upstream compose file and environment template from the Yuvomi project on GitHub.

mkdir -p ~/yuvomi && cd ~/yuvomi
curl -LO https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ulsklyc/yuvomi/main/docker-compose.yml
curl -LO https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ulsklyc/yuvomi/main/.env.example
cp .env.example .env

Install Dependencies

You only need Docker with the Compose plugin on the host. Confirm both are installed before going further.

docker --version
docker compose version

Configure Environment Variables

Open .env and fill in SESSION_SECRET and DB_ENCRYPTION_KEY with long random values.

openssl rand -hex 32
openssl rand -hex 24

Start the Yuvomi Application

Bring the stack up in the background, then open port 3000 in your firewall and browse to your-domain:3000 to create the admin account.

docker compose up -d

Railway handles the HTTPS certificate, the public domain and the persistent volume for you, which is why the managed template needs none of these steps.

Official Pricing of Yuvomi (Yuvomi pricing)

Yuvomi is MIT open-source software, so the code is free to use, modify and self-host.

Yuvomi hosted vs self hosted comparison (Pricing, features, costs, and more)

Upstream offers information at yuvomi.cloud, and this template does not invent any hosted plans.

Monthly cost of self hosting Yuvomi on Railway

Railway bills on usage, so the monthly cost depends on the RAM and CPU the Yuvomi service uses, how large the volume grows, and which other services you run.

System Requirements for Hosting Yuvomi on a VPS

A small VPS with enough memory for a Node.js container and a Docker runtime will run Yuvomi comfortably for a household.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Where is the admin password?

The admin account is created on first boot with the username admin and the password you set in YUVOMI_ADMIN_PASSWORD.

What happens if I lose DB_ENCRYPTION_KEY?

The database is encrypted with SQLCipher, so a lost DB_ENCRYPTION_KEY means the database can never be opened again.

Where are backups kept?

Yuvomi runs a backup every night at 02:00 and writes it to /data/backups on the volume. It keeps the 7 most recent backups.

Can I sync Google calendars?

Yes, Yuvomi supports two-way Google calendar sync, along with CalDAV. Google sync needs its own credentials added through Variables.

Does push need HTTPS?

Yes, push notifications need HTTPS, and Railway gives your service an HTTPS domain automatically. Use that domain as your BASE_URL.

How do family members join?

Open Settings as the admin and create an invite link for each family member. They open the link, pick their own password, and sign in.
