Deploy and Host self hosted Hermes Agent Slack (Open-Source AI Agent) on Railway

This template runs one Hermes Agent gateway on Railway and talks to Slack over Socket Mode, so no public webhook URL is needed. The bot answers DMs, mentions and threads, with memory and skills on a volume. It suits teams that want their own agent in Slack.

About Hosting Hermes Agent Slack open-source software on Railway (self hosted Hermes Agent Slack template)

This template runs one Hermes Agent service pinned to nousresearch/hermes-agent:v0.22.0, with its home on the /opt/data volume. Config, memory, skills, sessions and the Slack manifest live there, so the bot's learned context belongs to your team, not a vendor.

Railway handles the container, the volume and the HTTPS domain. Slack still needs your tokens and scopes, but Socket Mode means you never expose a public webhook.

Why Deploy Hermes Agent Slack, the Slack AI alternative on Railway (Railway Free Trial)

Slack AI lives inside Slack and bills per seat, with limits on which history it sees and what it remembers. The $5 Railway trial covers the first run.

Railway is a singular platform to deploy your infrastructure stack. Railway will host your infrastructure so you don't have to deal with configuration, while allowing you to vertically and horizontally scale it.

By deploying Hermes Agent Slack on Railway, you are one step closer to supporting a complete full-stack application with minimal burden. Host your servers, databases, AI agents, and more on Railway.

Railway vs Other Hosting Providers and VPS for Hermes Agent Slack self hosting

Socket Mode dials out from the box, so no host needs a public Slack endpoint; the difference is who patches the machine.

ProviderWhat You Get with RailwayWhat You Get with the Other Provider
DigitalOceanPinned image, port 8642, /opt/data volume, health check, variables in a UIA Droplet you provision, Docker and systemd you write, backups you own
AWSManaged restart and logs, no EC2 or security group workEC2 or ECS plus IAM, VPC and load balancer choices to configure first
HetznerFast redeploys, persistent volume, nothing to patchServers you patch over SSH and monitor yourself

Common Use Cases for hosted Hermes Agent Slack

  • Team Q&A bot in a channel: invite the bot to a shared channel and teammates mention it with questions. The history scopes matter here: without channels:history and groups:history it only answers in DMs, which is the first gotcha most people hit.
  • Private DM assistant for one person: lock SLACK_ALLOWED_USERS down to a single member ID and the agent becomes a personal assistant that still keeps memory and skills on the /opt/data volume.
  • Scheduled reports to a home channel: point SLACK_HOME_CHANNEL at a channel and let cron deliver recurring summaries there, so the team reads output without asking for it.
  • Thread summaries on mention: mention the bot inside a long thread and it reads the replies it can see, then answers in place instead of scattering a second conversation.
  • File handling: with files:read and files:write set, people drop logs or docs into a thread and ask about them. Missing files:read is the usual reason uploads get ignored.

Dependencies for Hermes Agent Slack Docker hosted on Railway

One service runs nousresearch/hermes-agent:v0.22.0, pinned by sha256, on port 8642, health /health, volume /opt/data (config, memory, skills, sessions). Slack needs no inbound route; Socket Mode dials out.

Deployment Dependencies for Managed Hermes Agent Slack Service (AI Agent)

Set a model key first: OPENROUTER_API_KEY, ANTHROPIC_API_KEY or OPENAI_API_KEY (empty by default) or Nous Portal. API_SERVER_KEY is generated, and the API port 8642 plus HERMES_API_URL stay fixed.

Implementation Details for Hermes Agent Slack (Using Hermes Agent official docker image)

The image is the official MIT build, so Slack lives in config, not a fork. hermes slack manifest --agent-view --write writes ~/.hermes/slack-manifest.json, which on Railway sits under /opt/data; check the printed path.

How does Hermes Agent Slack compare against other Slack AI assistants

Hermes Agent vs Slack AI (Salesforce Slack AI)

  • Hosting: Slack AI is an add-on inside Slack. Hermes runs on your Railway service, with memory and skills on your own volume.
  • Models: you pick the provider key. Slack AI follows Salesforce's stack.
  • Slack AI wins: no tokens to rotate, no setup. You buy it and it's on.

Hermes Agent vs OpenClaw (OpenClaw)

  • Shape: both are self-hosted agent gateways with a Slack channel you configure yourself.
  • Loop: Hermes keeps skills and memory across sessions and adds cron and subagents.
  • Channels: Hermes answers in DMs, mentions and threads, and SLACK_ALLOWED_USERS keeps it to named member IDs.
  • OpenClaw wins: if your team already runs it, there's one less stack to learn.

Hermes Agent vs a custom Bolt bot (custom Bolt app)

  • Work: a Bolt bot means writing handlers for events, threads and files. Hermes ships the manifest and the handlers.
  • Scopes: Hermes includes channels:history, groups:history and files:read. Hand-rolled bots forget them and break outside DMs.
  • Custom wins: full control for one narrow reply with no reasoning.

Hermes Agent vs Claude in Slack (Anthropic Claude in Slack)

  • Models: Claude in Slack runs Anthropic's models. Hermes uses whichever provider key you set.
  • Extras: both answer DMs and mentions. Hermes also delivers cron output to SLACK_HOME_CHANNEL.
  • Claude in Slack wins: install and go, no tokens, no volume, no redeploys.

How to use Hermes Agent Slack (the OSS self-improving AI agent)?

  1. In the hermes-agent service variables, set one model key such as OPENROUTER_API_KEY, then redeploy.
  2. Open the Railway service shell and write the manifest:
hermes slack manifest --agent-view --write
  1. Go to api.slack.com/apps, choose Create New App, From an app manifest, and paste the JSON from the file it wrote.
  2. Install the app to your workspace and copy the xoxb bot token.
  3. Create an app-level token with connections:write for Socket Mode and copy the xapp value.
  4. Add the variables and redeploy:
SLACK_BOT_TOKEN=xoxb-...
SLACK_APP_TOKEN=xapp-...
SLACK_ALLOWED_USERS=U01ABC2DEF3
  1. Invite the bot to a channel and mention it.

How to self host Hermes Agent Slack on other VPS Services (Hermes Agent self hosting guide)

Same gateway, same Socket Mode, no public port for Slack.

Clone the Repository

git clone https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent.git
cd hermes-agent

Install Dependencies

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent/main/scripts/install.sh | bash
hermes setup

Configure Environment Variables

Export both tokens, an allowlist and one model key:

export SLACK_BOT_TOKEN=xoxb-your-token
export SLACK_APP_TOKEN=xapp-your-token
export SLACK_ALLOWED_USERS=U01ABC2DEF3
export OPENROUTER_API_KEY=your-key

Run hermes slack manifest --agent-view --write, then create the app from that manifest at api.slack.com/apps.

Start the Hermes Agent Slack Application

hermes gateway # foreground
hermes gateway start # or as an installed service

Config, memory and skills live under ~/.hermes. Railway already handles the image, volume, health check and restarts, so you just add the tokens and redeploy.

Official Pricing of Hermes Agent Slack (Hermes Agent pricing)

The Hermes Agent software is MIT licensed and free to self host, and creating the Slack app from the manifest costs nothing. There is no per-seat fee for the Slack integration. Nous Portal is an optional paid route.

Hermes Agent Slack cloud vs self hosted comparison (Pricing, features, costs, and more)

Self hosting keeps the tokens, the memory and the skills on hardware you control, and pricing stays predictable because you pay Railway for the container and a model provider for tokens.

Monthly cost of self hosting Hermes Agent Slack on Railway

Expect about $5-10/mo for the service at 512 MB to 1 GB, with the $5 trial covering the first stretch. No public URL is needed, so there's no load balancer or ingress line item.

System Requirements for Hosting Hermes Agent Slack on a VPS

Any small Linux box runs it: 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM and a few GB of disk for the /opt/data volume that holds config, memory, skills and sessions. Keep a model key set, and plan a backup for that volume.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do I need a public URL for Slack to reach the bot?

No. Hermes uses the Bolt SDK in Socket Mode, which dials out over a WebSocket to Slack.

Why does the bot only answer in DMs?

That's the classic missing-scope symptom. Without channels:history and groups:history the bot can't read channel messages, so mentions go unanswered even though DMs work fine. Regenerate the app from the manifest or add the scopes, reinstall, then redeploy.

How do I restrict who can use it?

Set SLACK_ALLOWED_USERS to a comma-separated list of Slack member IDs like U01ABC2DEF3. Leave it unset and the gateway denies all messages as a safety default. SLACK_ALLOWED_CHANNELS narrows it further if you only want a few rooms.

Can it read files people upload?

Yes, if files:read and files:write are granted. Those two scopes are the ones people forget, and without files:read the agent often can't reliably load an attachment at all.

Can one Hermes serve two workspaces?

Yes. Put comma-separated bot tokens in SLACK_BOT_TOKEN, one per workspace; a single app-level token still handles Socket Mode.

Where are conversations stored?

On the /opt/data volume, alongside config, memory, skills and sessions, and the manifest the CLI writes lands under that Hermes home. Check the path the command prints.
