Deploy and Host NocoDB on Railway

NocoDB logo

NocoDB turns a PostgreSQL database into a collaborative spreadsheet that anyone on your team can use, with 65,000+ GitHub stars and grid, gallery, kanban, calendar and form views on top of real SQL tables. This template runs NocoDB with PostgreSQL and Redis on Railway, wired together over the private network, with a persistent volume for attachments. Airtable bills $20 per editor per month on Team and caps its free plan at 1,000 records per base. Self-hosted NocoDB has no record cap and no seat fees, and costs around $5–10/month on Railway for a small team.

What This Template Deploys

ServicePurpose
NocoDBThe NocoDB web app and REST API on port 8080: bases, tables, views, forms, roles and webhooks.
PostgreSQL 18Stores NocoDB's metadata (users, bases, views) and the tables you create, with SSL and Railway's Data panel.
Redis 8.2Cache NocoDB uses for faster page loads and shared state, password-protected and persisted to disk.
Persistent Volumes/usr/app/data/ on NocoDB for uploaded attachments, /var/lib/postgresql/data on Postgres, /data on Redis.

All three services are connected through Railway reference variables. NocoDB gets its Postgres connection from NC_DB, its Redis connection from NC_REDIS_URL, and a login-token secret generated at deploy time. There are no passwords to type and no connection strings to copy by hand.

About Hosting NocoDB

NocoDB is a no-code database platform. Instead of a hosted proprietary store, it keeps every row in a SQL database you control and gives you a spreadsheet interface on top. People who have never written SQL can build tables, link records between them, add lookups, rollups and formulas, and share forms or read-only views with clients. Developers get an auto-generated REST API and Swagger docs for every table, plus API tokens and webhooks for integrations.

A production NocoDB install needs the app server, a reliable PostgreSQL database, a cache, persistent storage for uploads, HTTPS, and a public URL for invite emails and shared links. On a VPS that means Docker Compose, a reverse proxy, TLS certificates and your own backups.

On Railway, the stack starts with one click. Postgres and Redis run on the private network, HTTPS is automatic, and every service keeps its data on a volume across redeploys. Because the data lives in standard Postgres, you can also query it directly with SQL, connect BI tools like Metabase, or back it up with pg_dump. NocoDB doesn't lock you in.

Typical cost: ~$5–10/month on Railway for a small team, including the database and cache. The Railway Hobby plan is $5/month and includes $5 of usage. Busy instances with many users or large attachments use more, and Pro ($20/month) suits teams that need more resources or SMTP email.

Deploy NocoDB in Under 5 Minutes

  1. Click Deploy on Railway. NocoDB, Postgres and Redis start with generated credentials (about 2–3 minutes).
  2. Make sure the NocoDB service has a public domain on port 8080. If none was created, add one under Settings, Networking, then redeploy so NC_PUBLIC_URL picks it up.
  3. Open the URL and create the first account. This user becomes the super admin.
  4. Create a base, then import a CSV, Excel file or Airtable base, or start from a blank table.
  5. Invite teammates, set their roles (owner, creator, editor, commenter, viewer), and share forms or views.

No Docker Compose. No reverse proxy. No record limits.

Common Use Cases

  • Airtable replacement. Move bases off Airtable and stop paying per editor, with no 1,000-record free cap.
  • Internal tools and admin panels. Give ops, support or sales teams a friendly editor over Postgres tables.
  • CRM and project tracking. Kanban pipelines, calendar views, linked contacts and companies.
  • Data collection. Public forms that write straight into your database, with conditional fields.
  • Inventory and asset registers. Galleries with images, barcodes and attachments stored on your own volume.
  • Backend for apps and automations. The REST API and webhooks connect NocoDB to n8n, Zapier-style tools or your own code.

Configuration

VariableRequiredDescription
NC_DB✅ Auto-injectedPostgres connection in NocoDB's pg://host:port?u=&p=&d= format, over the private network.
NC_REDIS_URL✅ Auto-injectedRedis cache connection from the Redis service.
NC_PUBLIC_URL✅ SetPublic URL https:// plus your Railway domain. It builds invite, password-reset and shared-view links.
NC_AUTH_JWT_SECRET🔐 Auto-generatedSigns login tokens. Changing it signs every user out.
ENABLE_ALPINE_PRIVATE_NETWORKING✅ SetLets the Alpine-based image resolve Railway's private IPv6 hostnames.
POSTGRES_PASSWORD, REDIS_PASSWORD🔐 Auto-generatedDatabase and cache passwords.
NC_SMTP_*OptionalNC_SMTP_HOST, NC_SMTP_PORT, NC_SMTP_USERNAME, NC_SMTP_PASSWORD and NC_SMTP_FROM for invite and reset emails.
NC_S3_*OptionalBucket, region, endpoint and keys to store attachments in S3-compatible storage instead of the volume.

Email on the Hobby plan. Railway blocks outbound SMTP on Hobby, so invite and password-reset emails won't send there. Copy invite links from the NocoDB UI, or set NC_SMTP_* on Railway Pro.

Using a custom domain? Add it to the NocoDB service, then set NC_PUBLIC_URL to https://yourdomain.com and redeploy so links in emails and shared views use it.

Dependencies for NocoDB Hosting

  • A Railway account. Hobby ($5/month) covers a small team; Pro suits larger teams and SMTP email.
  • Optional: an email provider for invites and password resets.
  • Optional: an S3-compatible bucket (Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, AWS S3) if attachments outgrow the volume.

Implementation Details

NocoDB runs the official nocodb/nocodb image on port 8080 and reaches Postgres through the pg:// string in NC_DB, built from Postgres's private domain and credentials. Redis uses a generated password and saves to its volume every 60 seconds. Postgres 18 runs Railway's SSL image with a TCP proxy for the Data panel and SQL clients.

The NocoDB image tracks the latest release. Once your team relies on it, pin a tag and back up Postgres before upgrading.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this NocoDB template include? NocoDB, PostgreSQL 18 and Redis 8.2, connected over Railway's private network, with generated passwords and a login-token secret. Each service has a persistent volume, so your bases and attachments survive redeploys.

How much does it cost compared to Airtable? About $5–10/month on Railway for a small team, with no per-seat fees and no record cap. Airtable Team costs $20 per editor per month billed annually, so a five-editor team pays $100/month.

Can I import my Airtable bases into NocoDB? Yes. NocoDB has an Airtable import that brings in tables, records and attachments with an Airtable token. You can also import CSV and Excel files.

Is NocoDB open source? NocoDB is source-available under the Sustainable Use License: free to self-host for your own internal or personal use, but you can't resell it as a hosted service. The self-hosted Community edition has unlimited records, storage and seats.

Why aren't invite or password-reset emails arriving? Railway blocks outbound SMTP on the Hobby plan. Copy invite links from the NocoDB UI, or set NC_SMTP_* on Railway Pro. Also check that NC_PUBLIC_URL matches your live domain.

Can I query NocoDB's data with SQL? Yes. Your tables live in the Postgres service, so you can connect psql, Metabase or any SQL client through the Data panel or TCP proxy. Edit schemas through NocoDB so its metadata stays in sync.

Why Deploy and Host NocoDB on Railway?

Railway is a singular platform to deploy your infrastructure stack. Railway will host your infrastructure so you don't have to deal with configuration, while allowing you to vertically and horizontally scale it.

By deploying NocoDB on Railway, you get a self-hosted Airtable alternative on your own Postgres and Redis, with HTTPS, persistent storage and no per-seat pricing, for a few dollars a month.
