Deploy and Host Whoop MCP Server on Railway

Whoop MCP Server icon

Whoop MCP Server is an open-source MCP server that lets Claude, ChatGPT and other MCP apps answer questions about your own WHOOP data: recovery, HRV, sleep stages, strain and workouts. Host it on Railway and ask "How did I sleep this week?" from any device, for about a dollar or two a month. It's an independent MIT-licensed project, not affiliated with WHOOP.

What This Template Deploys

ServicePurpose
Whoop MCP ServerMCP server (ghcr.io/yuridivonis/whoop-mcp-server:1, port 3000, public HTTPS domain, /health check) with a setup page that walks you through connecting WHOOP.
Persistent VolumeMounted at /data — stores your AI-app sign-ins and encrypted WHOOP tokens so you stay connected across redeploys.

One small service. It fetches data from WHOOP when you ask and keeps no copy of your health data — only sign-ins and encrypted tokens.

About Hosting Whoop MCP Server

Claude and ChatGPT reach MCP servers over the internet, so a server running on your laptop only works while that laptop is on and only in desktop apps. A hosted server works from web and mobile too — but it must be private, because it can read your health data.

On Railway, the server gets an HTTPS address, generated secrets for token encryption and the AI-app password, and a volume for its sign-ins. AI apps connect with OAuth 2.1 and need your password plus your approval before they can read anything.

You'll create a free WHOOP developer app. After deploying, open the server's page: it shows the exact redirect URL and fields to enter at WHOOP's developer dashboard. Paste the app's client ID and secret over the placeholders, redeploy, and approve WHOOP once on your first question.

Typical cost: ~$1–3/month on Railway for this lightweight service, within the $5 Hobby plan.

Deploy Whoop MCP Server in Under 10 Minutes

  1. Click Deploy on Railway — the server starts with generated secrets (~1 minute).
  2. Open the service's public URL; the setup page shows what to enter in WHOOP's developer dashboard.
  3. Create the WHOOP app and paste its keys into WHOOP_CLIENT_ID and WHOOP_CLIENT_SECRET, then redeploy.
  4. Add the server's address as a custom connector in Claude or ChatGPT, and sign in with MCP_AUTH_PASSWORD.
  5. Ask a question and approve the WHOOP connection once.

No laptop that must stay on. No local install. No data copied to a third party.

Common Use Cases

  • WHOOP data in Claude — "connect whoop to claude" for sleep and recovery questions
  • WHOOP data in ChatGPT — ask about trends in plain language
  • Morning briefings — recovery, last night's sleep and today's strain in one answer
  • Training analysis — workouts, heart-rate zones and strain over weeks
  • Sleep coaching — stages, consistency and sleep debt explained by your AI
  • Personal health dashboards — combine WHOOP answers with other MCP tools

Configuration

VariableRequiredDescription
WHOOP_CLIENT_ID, WHOOP_CLIENT_SECRET✅ Replace placeholdersFrom your WHOOP developer app. The setup page shows the redirect URL to use.
MCP_AUTH_PASSWORD🔐 Auto-generatedPassword your AI app asks for when you connect it.
ENCRYPTION_SECRET🔐 Auto-generatedEncrypts stored WHOOP tokens. Never change it.
PORTAuto-set3000, matching the domain's target port.

Keep MCP_AUTH_PASSWORD private. Anyone with your server address and this password could ask the server for your health data — but they'd still need your approval in the sign-in step.

Dependencies for Whoop MCP Server Hosting

  • Railway account — Hobby ($5/month) is plenty.
  • A WHOOP account and a free WHOOP developer app (client ID and secret).
  • An MCP-capable AI app such as Claude or ChatGPT with custom connectors.

Deployment Dependencies

Implementation Details

The service runs the :1 image tag, so it picks up compatible updates within major version 1. It exposes MCP tools including get_today, get_recovery_trends, get_sleep_analysis, get_strain_history and get_workouts, each fetching from the WHOOP API v2 at request time.

Only sign-ins and WHOOP tokens are stored on /data, with tokens encrypted by ENCRYPTION_SECRET. Keep that secret fixed; changing it means reconnecting WHOOP.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Whoop MCP Server? An open-source MCP server that lets AI apps like Claude and ChatGPT read your WHOOP recovery, sleep, strain and workout data when you ask, using the official WHOOP API.

How much does it cost to host? About $1–3/month on Railway, covered by the $5 Hobby plan. The WHOOP developer app is free to create.

Why does my AI app say it can't connect, or WHOOP authorization fails? Check that WHOOP_CLIENT_ID and WHOOP_CLIENT_SECRET replaced the placeholders, that the WHOOP app's redirect URL matches the one on the server's setup page, and that you redeployed after changing them.

Does it store my health data? No. Data is fetched from WHOOP on each request. The volume only holds AI-app sign-ins and your encrypted WHOOP tokens.

Which AI apps work with it? It's tested with Claude and ChatGPT; other MCP apps that sign in with OAuth should work the same way. See the project's compatibility notes.

Is it an official WHOOP product? No. It's an independent open-source project that uses the public WHOOP API and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by WHOOP.

Why Deploy and Host Whoop MCP Server on Railway?

Railway is a singular platform to deploy your infrastructure stack. Railway will host your infrastructure so you don't have to deal with configuration, while allowing you to vertically and horizontally scale it.

By deploying Whoop MCP Server on Railway, you get a private, always-reachable connection between your WHOOP data and the AI apps you use, for about a dollar or two a month.
